University of Virginia - Winter Update

By Marie Lyse Turk
PGY2 Psychiatry
University of Virginia Health System

Our psychiatry program at the University of Virginia Health System has always been proud of the achievements of its faculty members and residents, who prove to be even brighter every semester. This summer, many of our staff members have exceeded average expectations and showed tremendous willingness to advance academically. Let us start by congratulating two of our 4th year residents who were accepted for an addiction fellowship at top-notch programs: Dr. Derek Blevins who was accepted at Columbia University Addiction Psychiatry T-32 funded research and clinical fellowship, and Dr. Surbhi Khanna who was accepted for an addiction fellowship at the University of South Carolina. We do wish them the best of luck in their pursuit of a promising career.

Among other achievements, many of our faculty members received promotions due to our program’s appreciation for their strong efforts to promote higher education and clinical excellence. Of those members, Dr. Nassima Ait-Daoud is now an Associate Program Director. Both Dr. Karen Ingersoll and Dr. Vishal Madaan are now appointed Professors of psychiatry.

Many of our faculty members have shown immense dedication towards the field of psychiatry, and have earned multiple awards due to their contributions in academia. Dr. Donna Broshek was awarded ‘The John Edward Fowler Professorship in Clinical Psychology’ for five years. Also, Dr. Surbhi Khanna received the ‘American Psychiatric Association Resident Recognition Award’ for residents who exemplify APA values in leadership, clinical excellency and community service. Dr. Khanna also received the Scholarship Award, chosen by the faculty for excellence in clinical and academic pursuits at the University of Virginia. Dr. Derek Blevins earned the ‘Regional Travel Award Scholarship’ at the American Academy of Addiction 27th Annual Meeting. Dr. Jordan Rosen received the ‘Resident to Resident Teaching Award’ for his dedication to teaching within our psychiatry program at UVA. Furthermore, Dr. Joshua Smith earned the ‘Outstanding Teaching Award’ for his hard work and excellence in teaching UVA medical students. Dr. Smith also won the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the Psychiatric Society of Virginia Fall Meeting, where he astonished PSV members with his case report entitled ‘A Neuropsychiatric Presentation of Multiple Sclerosis,’ which he wrote along with Dr. Diana Robinson and Dr. Mudhasir Bashir.

Our department would also like the acknowledge the achievements of Dr. Surbhi Khanna, who along with Dr. Veronica Harsh, presented a case report on ‘Tardive Dyskinesia Following Ziprasidone Use’ at the IPS: Mental Health Services Conference in Washington, DC.

Dr. Khanna, along with Dr. Jordan Rosen, also presented ‘A Case of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Prolonged Delirium in a Patient with Lennox-Gastuat Syndrome’ at the Psychiatric Society of Virginia Fall Meeting in Roanoke. Last but not least, two posters written by Dr. Khanna, Dr. Blevins and Dr. Nassima Ait-Daoud, have been accepted for presentation at the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry’s upcoming Annua lMeeting in Florida this December.
