Summer is here! And with the start of a new academic year, we cannot help but reflect back on our department's achievements as well as our resident's continuous thrive to excel. We want to start by congratulating our two new chief residents: Dr. Chelsea Wolf and Dr. Jordan Rosen, who both proved to be excellent mentors for their colleagues. Dr. Rosen has once again received the Mulholand All University Teaching Award this year for his excellency on teaching medical students.

Many other awards were distributed during our department's graduation ceremony which took place on June 16. Dr. Jordan Rosen received the Resident to Resident Teaching Award for his dedication to teaching within the program. Dr. Joshua Smith as well as Dr. John Azer received the Outstanding Teaching Award for their dedication and excellence in the teaching of medical students. Dr. Diana Robinson received the Scholarship Award and Dr. Surbhi Khanna received the Peer Commendation Award nominated by resident peers, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the morale, camaraderie and support of fellow residents and the residency program mission. Dr. Maria Moreno received the Humanitarianism Award for her humanitarian approach to the practice of psychiatry and medicine. Furthermore, the Faculty Teaching Award was granted to both Dr. Larry Merkel and Dr. Justin Smith for their excellence in didactic and clinical teaching in both the hospital setting and the outpatient setting.

Our residents never cease to amaze us and our department is proud to announce that 18 residents have presented at least one poster at the APA Annual Meeting this year in San Diego. Here are some of the interesting titles that attracted the public's attention:

Last but not least, as we welcome our new interns, we bid our farewells to our fourth year residents. Dr. Danielle Ivanova will be starting her job as a consult-liaison psychiatrist at St. John Providence Medical Center in Michigan. Dr. Maria Moreno will also become an attending on an inpatient unit in Charleston, NC. Dr. Surbhi Khanna was accepted at the Medical University of South Carolina for an addiction psychiatry fellowship. Dr. Derek Blevins will also be undergoing an Addiction Psychiatry fellowship at Columbia University, NY. Dr. Erin Dooley will be pursuing a Public Psychiatry fellowship at Yale University. Finally, Dr. Luke Romano will be staying at UVA to pursue a Forensic Psychiatry fellowship. We are certain that our graduates will excel in their future careers and will make our department proud. We will miss them and we wish them the best of luck!
