In Memory of C. Knight Aldrich, MD

C. Knight Aldrich, MD

We also recognize the passing of a great man and wonderful psychiatrist and teacher, Knight Aldrich. Knight just passed away at the age of 103 and he remained active in our local society until he was 100, giving us a talk just three years ago on empathy. He couldn’t hear a thing, but he retained his wisdom and wit for an unbelievable length of time. Knight was one of my professors during the third year of residency at UVA, leading a weekly formulation conference  and it was always educational and deeply psychological. One of the highlights for me was a story he told about a woman obsessed with a powerful man, an embarrassing incident at a campaign party, followed by the politician taking her aside, then driving her home when she suddenly grabbed the wheel of the car and the car plunged off a bridge and into a creek. This was an amazing and eloquent story told over the course of an hour whose characters were disguised until the big reveal…the story of Ted Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopechne from a completely different perspective. It was a memorable performance and it seems like only yesterday to me.

Knight was born in 1914, graduated from Wesleyan in 1935, from Northwestern School of Medicine in 1940, served as intern at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, then residency at Ellis Island, followed by a tour in the U.S. Public Health Service. He eventually became chairman of the new Department of Psychiatry at University of Chicago, where he was a pioneer in integrating psychiatry into general medical practice, which we still are working on today. He worked in the community mental health sector in NJ and then at Region 10 before coming to the faculty at UVA, where he served with distinction for many years in both the psychiatry and family medicine programs. He spent much of his extended retirement reading and writing and published many articles and books on the history of psychiatry, the Civil War and his family.  He will be sorely missed but we were all lucky to have had him around for so many years.
