Remembering Henry Holland, MD

Henry Holland, MD

I wanted to share my thoughts on the passing of one of our longtime colleagues and PSV member, Henry Holland. Henry was born in Richmond July 15, 1939 and died January 9, 2017 at age 77. Henry left behind his wife of 51 years, Brenda, 2 daughters, a son and six grandchildren and had a remarkable life despite the physical limitations he suffered from contracting polio at age 11. After treatment at MCV in 1950, he was able to relearn how to walk and ride a bike and ultimately managed to finish high school at Thomas Jefferson, college at Washington and Lee, then medical school at MCV, where he also finished residency in psychiatry and served on the faculty before he began his private practice, which he was able to sustain almost until the end of his life. He remained engaged with PSV and continued to come to meetings even after being on a ventilator for the last several years of his life.

I met Henry when I was a third year student at MCV while doing a rotation at St. Mary’s, where Henry was one of the attendings. He was a great teacher and I enjoyed the time I spent so much that I was able to finagle a fourth year elective with him for a month, during which he allowed me to sit in with him in both his inpatient and outpatient practices. He treated all kinds of patients, both medical management and psychotherapy, and I cannot recall any patients who did not allow me to sit in and observe. It was an amazing experience and served me well in my early career. I was extremely fortunate to have known Henry when he was able to talk with more ease, something that became very difficult as time went by. He was kind, wise and had an outstanding sense of humor. He persevered through incredible hardships to live a full life, serve his community, his church and his patients and I will always be grateful for having had him as a teacher, mentor and role model.
