I am humbled and honored to be addressing the Psychiatric Society of Virginia’s membership as the current President. When I participated in my first PSV Board Meeting as a PGY-2 resident at the University of Virginia in 2010, I had no idea that I’d be sitting before you today typing a President’s Message for the newsletter. I truly am honored to be given this responsibility and I hope to serve you well. I would like to thank Dr. Joe Mason for his recent term as President and for his assistance with the transition. I am grateful to the Board of Directors as I would not be in this position without them, and we certainly would not be operating as the strong organization we are without the assistance of Ruggles Service Corporation and our association manager, Andrew Mann.
As I was thinking about some personal goals to accomplish during my term as President, I immediately thought about Dr. Anita Everett’s focus on physician burn-out and physician well-being. It is sometimes difficult for us to show self-compassion when we are overtired, overworked and feel emotionally drained after a long day of working with our patients and families. As physicians, we are expected to remain strong and stoic, yet capable of expressing empathy for our patients. As part of our Fall Meeting, we will have a workshop on physician well-being which I hope will be helpful to our membership.
I am very excited to chair the Fall Meeting Planning Committee for our upcoming meeting on September 28-29, 2018 in Staunton, Virginia. The meeting’s theme is 'Fighting Stigma in Mental Healthcare' and we have an excellent panel of speakers lined up. When discussing stigma in mental healthcare, several topics came to mind. These topics range from discussing certain stigmatized patient populations (i.e. transgendered patients and patients with substance use disorders) as well as how stigma affects access to mental healthcare. Some questions I asked myself are: “Are there words I use or actions I take that may actually further stigmatize a patient population?” and “As psychiatrists we should be taking action to reduce stigma re: mental illness, but are we doing a good job?” Some topics we will cover include stigma regarding mental healthcare in society and within the treatment relationship, gender dysphoria and caring for transgendered patients; stigma in global mental health, mental health parity laws in Virginia; ageism and stigma related to older adults, and substance use disorders. Please consider registering for this upcoming meeting.
Thank you for your membership and engagement in the Psychiatric Society of Virginia. I am proud to be a part of this very active district branch and would like to hear from our membership if you have concerns that may affect psychiatrists at the state level. We are always looking for new members to serve on the PSV Board, so if you are interested in that opportunity, please let us know by emailing Andrew Mann at [email protected].
I look forward to seeing many of you in Staunton on September 28-29.
