The annual Spring Meeting of PSV March 17-18 featured honorees and speakers worthy of any national psychiatric conference. The theme, “The Economics of Healthcare,” was the brainchild of our incoming president, Dr. Joe Mason, who organized the program and the speakers, assisted by the members of the program planning committee.
Dr. Robert F. Graboyes gave a medical economist’s view of the future of medical care in the digital era, including direct-to-consumer products and smart phone apps that can track EKG changes. Virginia State Senator R. Creigh Deeds spoke about the need for additional state action for improving mental healthcare in the Commonwealth. He reminded us that the push for reform and adequate governmental funding can require years of educating the legislators and many votes to make progress. He urged us all, in a compelling talk, to stay involved and to put humanity first.
Ms. Virginia Brooks, a quality health specialist, gave an outline of the coming quality payment programs required by CMS and the Affordable Care Act to demonstrate that physicians are providing high quality care. Dr. Anita Everett, President-Elect of APA, gave an overview of APA programs that steer the national efforts for parity funding and real improvements in psychiatric research and practice. Dr. Norman V. Carroll gave a pharmaco-therapeutic view of the costs and benefits of generic versus brand name medications and the effect of market focus on cost effectiveness of pharmaceutical treatment.
A wide ranging panel discussion on the future of mental health followed, led by Dr. Peter Buckley, a psychiatrist who is the new Dean of the VCU School of Medicine. Dr. Buckley skillfully kept the discussion lively and on point. Breakout sessions for residents were conducted on fellowships by MCV Consultation & Liaison Fellow, Dr. Inna Garber and on finances by Mr. Kenny Janes. MCV Junior Chief Resident, Dr. Reeyaz Esack, won the raffled gift basket.
On Friday evening, Dr. John Urbach was successfully surprised to be honored with PSV’s Lifetime Achievement Award for over three decades of outstanding service to the community, his patients and the psychiatry residency program at MCV/VCU. At the Saturday luncheon, prior to the passing of the PSV President’s gavel to the new President, Dr. Joe Mason, Dr. Ken Kendler was presented with PSV’s 2017 Outstanding Achievement Award for his seminal research of the heritable traits associated with psychiatric diseases. Dr. Kendler shared with the audience a profound summary of the highlights of his education and research and his vision for the future of genetic research in mental illness, which inspired a lot of hope.
Thank you to those who attended and supported this worthwhile conference. Thank you also to the members of the planning committee, especially Dr. Mason, for coordinating such a high quality event.
