Carilion Clinic Update

Exciting Times at Carilion Clinic

By Badr Ratnakaran, MBBS
PGY-2 Resident in Psychiatry,
Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine

These are exciting times for us. Carilion Clinic has announced a $300 million expansion to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. This includes a new building for psychiatric care, a separate emergency room for behavioral health patients and an interior courtyard as part of the current plan. The new facility will replace the existing facility for psychiatric care known as Rehab Building across South Jefferson Street, in Roanoke, Virginia. Construction is expected to begin next spring and will be completed by 2023.

Our senior residents will be graduating next month. Chief Resident, Dr. Caleb Pagliassotti will be settling in Virginia when he joins our Carilion Clinic Saint Albans Hospital at Christiansburg, VA. Chief Resident, Dr. Ralph McKenzie will be joining G. Werber Bryan Hospital at Columbia, in his home state of South Carolina. Dr. Jules Lagoy will be moving to the West Coast and will be working in Community Psychiatry in San Jose, California. The graduation ceremony was held at The Roanoke Hotel on May 7. We wish our seniors the best in their future endeavors.

Kudos to our PGY-2 resident, Dr. Tricia Lemelle, for receiving this year’s APA Diversity Leadership Fellowship!!

Our residents have made multiple presentations recently. PGY-3 Resident Dr. Glen Oriaifo and PGY-2 Resident Dr. Nayan Bhatia presented a poster titled, "Failure to thrive in a 68-year-old female with Major Depressive Disorder,” at the Annual Meeting of The American Neuropsychiatry Association held in March in Chicago, IL. Our residents also made multiple presentations at this year’s Annual Meeting of American Psychiatric Association held at San Francisco, CA. The presentations were as follows:

  1. Dr. Jules Lagoy, PGY-4 resident, presented the posters titled, "Suicide Survivors with Psychiatric Care Demonstrate Lower 5-Year Post-Discharge Mortality Than Other Trauma Patients at a Level 1 Trauma Center” and “Attitudes of VA Mental Health Professionals Toward LGBTQ Veterans.”
  2. Dr. Eli Rahmani, PGY-3, presented the poster titled, “Pharmacological Treatment of Agitation and/or Aggression in Patients Suffering From Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Reviews of Reviews.”

Four of our PGY-2 residents presented a series of posters on Psychiatry and Arts:

  1. Dr. Ayotunde Ayobello, presented the poster titled, “A Narrative Review of Portrayal of Alcohol Use in Art.”
  2. Dr. Nina Meletiche, presented the poster titled, “A Narrative Review of Portrayal of Scenes From Asylums in Arts.”
  3. Dr. Thomas Joseph, presented the poster titled, “A Narrative Review of Portrayal of Faces of Insanity in Arts.”
  4. Dr. Tricia Lemelle, presented the poster titled, “A Narrative Review of Portrayal of Early Treatments in Psychiatry in Arts.”

Congratulations to all our presenters! In other news, PGY-3 Residents, Dr. Eli Rahmani and Dr. Glen Oriaifo, will be our rising chief residents for the next academic year. I, Dr. Badr Ratnakaran, PGY-2 resident, will be taking over from Dr. Erin Hayes, our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow, as the resident representative for PSV from Carilion Clinic.
