PATIENTS
Patients must register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and in accordance with 18.2-250.1(C), must carry a valid written certification provided by their physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner for affirmative defense.
Patients may visit the Virginia Board of Pharmacy website to find more information and to start the registration process.
CAREGIVERS
Better known as caregivers, registered agents are individuals who may enter our members’ facilities on behalf of a patient with a written certification in order to retrieve the product(s) recommended to the patient by his or her physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. Caregivers must also register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
PHYSICIANS, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS AND NURSE PRACTITIONERS
A physician must register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy to be able to provide his or her patients with a valid written certification for the use of medical cannabis to treat or to alleviate the symptoms of any diagnosed condition or disease determined by the physician to benefit from such use.
The initial registration fee is $50 and the annual renewal fee is $50. Physicians may now complete the registration process directly with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
Beginning July 1, 2019, SB1557 authorizes physician assistants and nurse practitioners in addition to physicians to issue written certifications to patients. They too will follow a similar process with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy to register to issue written certifications.
Pharmacists
Pharmacists will play a key role in working with physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners to determine appropriate dosing of products. This is to ensure the best course of treatment for patients seeking relief from our medical CBD and THC-A oil. No registration is required.
