As I reflect on the theme of our PSV Fall 2021 newsletter Psychiatry and History, I cannot ignore the connection to our upcoming PSV Fall Meeting. The theme for the Fall Meeting is New Era in Psychiatry. Per Osayi Endolyn, an award-winning writer, “the past isn’t static, that what we unearth over time reveals new truths about ourselves.”

This is very true for how we practice medicine and psychiatry, and often we must look back at our history to move forward.  This is why I am very excited to announce the speakers for our upcoming Fall Meeting on September 24-25, who will help us examine the past, evaluate the present and present ways to move psychiatry forward.  This year’s speakers are:

Additionally, the conference will have an important legislative and advocacy update session on Friday evening about how PSV is working closely with the Medical Society of Virginia, the General Assembly, and state agencies to make sure we have a voice in decisions pertaining to the wellbeing of our patients and the practice of psychiatry in the Commonwealth.

I am particularly looking forward to the poster presentations by our residents, fellows, and medical students. Encouraging our younger members, and ourselves, to be the best in our profession by being innovative, inquisitive, and lifelong learners will help us serve our patients better. I would like to sincerely thank our PSV Foundation for sponsoring the cash prizes for the notable posters.

As our Fall Meeting is fast approaching, I am reminded that we are a professional organization, striving to do our best for our patients, society, and profession at the intersection of a crucial point in our history. Virginia has long played a crucial role in mental health history, but our health disparity data shows that there is still so much to be done. As we move forward, we must continue to acknowledge and strive for continued progress, and critically review our practices to do best by our patients.  This conference led by our distinguished group of speakers and presenters will hopefully be the catalyst to creating a New Era in Psychiatry.  I hope to see everyone at the meeting this fall on September 24-25.
