In January, I started working as the psychiatrist at the Daily Planet Health Services, whose mission is to provide accessible, comprehensive, and integrated quality health services to anyone, regardless of their housing, financial, citizenship or insurance status.

For those who are not familiar with The Planet, we have two primary clinical sites offering medical, behavioral, dental, and case management services; our West Grace Health Center downtown and our Southside Health Center near Southside Plaza, which primarily serves the Spanish-speaking population (and whose staff is almost entirely bilingual).  In addition to those clinics, we also provide services to shelter patients at the Caritas men’s and women’s shelters, and to patients at the Healing Place residential addiction treatment programs.

As the psychiatrist here, I work with a team of behavioral health clinicians who provide psychotherapy services, and three nurse practitioners who provide medication management services.  We offer office-based opioid treatment using an interdisciplinary team, including a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist.  We also are growing our services for people with HIV through the Ryan White program that includes medical, psychiatric, case management and psychosocial services.

We started rolling out vaccinations for the homeless population in Richmond around the time I started working here.  As I was waiting for my credentialing to be finalized, and to make myself useful, I had the honor of doing COVID testing and vaccinations at outreach clinics at the homeless shelters and here at the clinic – hundreds of them!  I hadn’t given a shot since medical school, but both my injection and nasal-swabbing techniques are now perfection.  Personally, it has been extremely rewarding to be on the front lines of beginning to get the pandemic under control for the vulnerable patients we serve.

As a Federally Qualified Health Center, our services are available to anyone, regardless of insurance status or citizenship status.  Please don’t hesitate to send folks our way!  My email is:  [email protected] and the website: https://dailyplanetva.org/
