Kara Beatty, MD |
Hi! My name is Kara Beatty and I am a Psychiatrist specializing in brain injury. I am excited about serving as President of the Richmond Psychiatric Society for the 2018-2019 year.
I received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology at Texas A&M University. After graduating, I traveled to Kaohsiung, Taiwan to teach English. When I returned to the United States, I worked as a case manager for individuals with ID/DD. I then attended the University of Texas at Houston for medical school. For residency, I attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where I served as chief my last year. During that time, I fell in love with Richmond and all it has to offer. After completing residency in 2017, I did a fellowship in brain injury medicine under the supervision of Dr. Gregory O’Shanick at the Center for Neurorehabilitation Services. I now have my own practice, Resilience Health, where I treat patients with TBI or stroke who need psychiatric care. I also see general psychiatry patients. In addition to my practice, I provide psychiatric consultation through the REACH program at a crisis therapeutic home for individuals with ID/DD/autism.
I am honored to be part of the Richmond chapter of PSV. When I first moved here, I was blown away by the diversity in this midsize city. At VCU, I was impressed by the willingness of my attendings’ and colleagues to help. Everyone was very warm and welcoming. I hope to continue with this same spirit in RPS this year. As an early career psychiatrist, I know that I have much to learn from more experienced psychiatrists. RPS provides a platform for bringing these two groups together. Within psychiatry many of us have become more specialized in certain areas. I hope that we can share knowledge in these different fields and form relationships for consults.
I am delighted to have Simran Kaur serving as Secretary and Avneet Madan as Treasurer. Both Sim and Avneet are PGY4 residents at VCU and plan to go onto Consult/Liaison fellowships. The meetings for this season will begin in October and end in June. Each meeting will include one hour of CME credit. This year we have a great lineup of speakers and will discuss a variety of subjects. We will be touching on some current “hot topics” that effect us in our career. To kick off the new year, we are going to be having a happy hour in September. More details will be sent closer to the date. I hope to see everyone there!
