Six medical students and one PhD candidate presented their research at EVMS Psychiatry Grand Rounds on July 11, 2018.

Nathanael Yoon (M4 student) presented his poster entitled “A Review to Improve Understanding of Buprenorphine and Buprenorphine/Naloxone Diversion, Misuse and Non-prescribed Use in the United States” at the Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in New York City, May, 2018. The paper was developed under the supervision of Stephanie Peglow, DO, MPH and with classmates Hoi Yee, Annie Lo and Brian Licht.

Leaders from various education training programs came together to discuss interprofessional training in Addiction Medicine with Jean Bennett, PhD, RN, SAMHSA Administrator for Region 3 and Carole Pratt, DDS, Senior Advisor and Confidential Assistant for Policy, Office of the Commissioner, Virginia Department of Health. This meeting was a revisit from their 2016 visit to all six Virginia medical schools. EVMS was first on their tour across the state, Monday, October 22, 2018.

Justin Smith, DO (Assistant Progessor) joined our department in June. Dr. Smith received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from Pacific Northwest University of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency in Psychiatry here at EVMS.
Stephanie Peglow, DO, MPH was assigned to the Communications Committee for the Psychiatric Society of Virginia.
Lisa Fore-Arcand, EdD received the “Innovations Award” for her contributions to medical education (specifically her work in integrated addiction-medicine education) at the annual meeting of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry in June in Minneapolis.
Lisa Fore-Arcand, EdD received a leadership award for her efforts in designing, directing, and teaching in the ADMSEP Scholars program since 2012.
Ryan Wade, MD won the 2nd Place award for his poster at the Psychiatric Society of Virginia’s Fall Meeting.
Wayles Haynes, MS4 was the People’s Choice Winner for her poster at the Psychiatric Society of Virginia's Fall Meeting, providing EVMS with two awards for the second year in a row.
Ryan Wade, MD was selected by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry to receive the AAAP’s 2018 Regional Travel Scholarship, including funds to create an addiction education curriculum component for residents at the academy’s 29th Annual meeting and Scientific Symposium in December.

Hampton Roads training program leaders had an opportunity to discuss education priorities, progress and needs and explore intersecting goals and resources related to care for individuals with substance use disorders, opioid overdose, medical school curricula and new funding opportunities. A major focus was exploring strategies to develop fellowships and training to aid in workforce development in the field of addiction and also to discuss interdisciplinary approaches to training and working together to help alleviate the number of overdoses and deaths in Virginia.
