On Oct 25, 2018, the VCU Department of Psychiatry hosted the VCU Student Psychiatry Society Happy Hour at Casa del Barco. It was a great event where faculty, residents and medical students were able to socialize and learn more about the field of psychiatry. We had a large range of student interest from first year medical students to fourth years from places like the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM). VCOM is doing an acting internship in hopes of attending residency here. It was a wonderful time with celebrated faculty members such as Dr. Levenson (who wrote the book on consult-liaison medicine), Dr. Moran (who runs the psychiatric emergency department and the schizophrenia inpatient team) and the chairman, Dr. Silverman who is helping to inspire the next generation of psychiatrists.

Our fellowship program has certainly had an exciting year so far. In March 2018, we moved into a brand new facility on VCU’s Brook Road campus. This new Virginia Treatment Center for Children building replaces an outdated institutional space from the 1950s, and allows us to provide state of the art care in a more modern, welcoming and safe place. With all the extra space for enhanced inpatient units, outpatient clinics, school services, occupational therapy and more, we are better able to provide mental health services to children and families across the state. We as fellows are certainly excited for all the opportunities the new building will bring!
In July we also welcomed a brand new fellow, Dr. Pratik Jain, who joins us after finishing his general psychiatry residency at the Jamaica Hospital Center in New York City. The second year fellows, Dr. Anisha Garg, Dr. Zehra Erdeve Temiz and myself are enjoying various elective rotations at local community mental health centers, autism clinics, and at the Department of Juvenile Justice. We are also really excited to be attending the AACAP meeting in Seattle this year!
