Richmond Psychiatric Society Update

By Kara Beatty, MD

It’s hard to believe that 2018 will soon be coming to an end. These last few months have been filled with many new adventures and a lot of fun! We started out the 2018-2019 season of RPS with a happy hour at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery at West Creek. This provided a wonderful way to meet other psychiatrists in the community and relax after work. Our first presentation of the year was on “Regulations of CBD Oils in Virginia.” Dr. Bill Harp, Executive Director of the Virginia Board of Medicine and Dr. Travis Shaw, clinical expert in CBD and THC oils, were our presenters. It was a full house and the discussion lasted for an hour after the presentation. I think that all attendees would agree that it was a very interesting topic! The following month, Dr. David Buxton, CEO of Center for Palliative Psychiatry and Medical Director of CJW Medical Center Palliative Care, presented on “Psychiatry and Palliative Care.” Once again, we had a great turn out for a thought-provoking presentation.

To finish up 2018, Dr. Sherif Meguid, assistant professor in C/L Psychiatry at VCU, will be presenting on “TBI and Neuropsychiatric Sequelae.” He has won multiple teaching awards during his career at VCU and is admired by many for his broad knowledge base. Needless to say, this is sure to be a fascinating presentation! In January, there will be no educational meeting, so we thought this would be a good time to host another RPS happy hour. Details of this event will be sent out closer to the date. To ensure the continued success of RPS, we have organized a Board with the current officers, the Immediate Past Pesident (Dr. Sherin Moideen), and two members-at-large (Dr. Divya Gongireddy and Dr. Inna Garber). Dr. Bill Harp has graciously agreed to serve as our advisor to the Board. A Board meeting will also be taking place in January, to which all paying members of RPS are invited.

I want to thank everyone that has come out to support RPS this year. It has been an incredible start to the season and I look forward to the community’s continued engagement!
