Dr. Stephanie Peglow, our addiction specialist, was featured on 13 News Now providing commentary on a recent study published in JAMA about the increasing number of children and teenagers dying from opioid poisoning.
"The vast increase in the recent years is most alarming," said Stephanie Peglow. "While it still doesn't rival the adult population numbers, it's still really scary that what we're seeing in adults is traveling downstream to children." Peglow said it is frustrating to know the health messaging and warnings haven't slowed the increase in opioid deaths among youth. "It's disheartening to know that we know prevention works and we know treatment works, yet we just haven't quite found the right answer," she said.
Peglow says Virginia's expansion of treatment and prevention programs is needed for adolescents. "As a state, we've spent a lot of money opening up access to treatment and that's been immeasurably helpful and wonderful, but there aren't a lot of options for teenagers," she said. True to her profession, Peglow said more investment in treatment could solve a lot of problems. "If we as a country could think about treatment and prevention as our primary goals, we could potentially end the opioid epidemic," she said.

PUBLICATION HIGHLIGHTS EVMS EXPERTISE IN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS
The EVMS Program on Autism Spectrum Disorders has evaluated and treated over 1,000 persons referred from within and outside of coastal Virginia. And the world is taking notice. Recently EVMS clinicians, scientists and students were major contributors to a special issue of Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry (PNP&BP) that is devoted to autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Jessica Burket, a PhD candidate in the EVMS graduate program in biomedical sciences; Maria Urbano, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; and Stephen Deutsch, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, contributed to and served as guest editors of the special issue. PNP&BP is a leading “high-impact” peer-reviewed journal devoted to both basic and translational neuroscience.
EVMS contributors covered:
Critical issues pertaining to diagnostic assessment and design and analysis of clinical trials (Dr. Urbano; Nicole Kreiser, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; Jennifer Flaherty, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; and Kathrin Hartmann, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences)
They were among experts from around the world who presented original research and reviewed genetic mechanisms, brain imaging studies, neuroendocrine exposures, animal models and a possible role of the cannabinoid receptor in pathogenesis and treatment.
“We feel strongly that the special issue reflects positively on the commitment of the EVMS Program in Autism Spectrum Disorders to the underserved population of persons with ASD and their families in our Hampton Roads community,” Dr. Deutsch says.
EVMS GIVES BACK
HOPES (Health Outreach Partnership of EVMS Students) Mental Health Clinic celebrated its one year anniversary in March 2019. This clinic provides longstanding healthcare to the uninsured in Norfolk and Portsmouth, with services including primary care, ophthalmology, women's health, dermatology, and now psychiatry. The mental health specialty clinic was implemented by medical student Joshua Ryan Dellinger, with the help of resident Ryan Wade and attending physician Stephanie Peglow. Since its inception, several medical students and residents have become involved to deliver mental health services to this underserved population.
EVMS Psychiatry Interest Group hosted its third annual Holiday Dinner and Community Service Gathering. Psychiatry students, residents, faculty and staff gather to assemble care packages including warm clothing, small blankets, toiletries and snacks, for patients who are discharged from the inpatient psychiatry unit and who are often homeless.
BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ACADEMIC PHYSICIANS
EVMS hosted the 2019 Southeast Regional Academic Medicine Career Development Conference of the National Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) initiative on March 23, 2019. The purpose of BNGAP is to inform diverse medical students and residents about academic medicine as a career option and provide resources to further explore and potentially embark on an academic medicine career. Residents Alison McCanon, Zhi Wu and Nithya Cherukuru will be in attendance to represent the EVMS Psychiatry department and will also be presenting posters of their recent academic work (see below).
