Larry Merkel, MD, PhD, DFAPA received his award from Meredith Lee, DO, FAPA. |
Dr. Larry Merkel was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award for his dedication to improving access to mental health services to underserved populations. Dr. Merkel, who is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, has helped improve mental health services, both locally and globally. He created the Global Mental Health Track for trainees at UVA so that they can collaboratively learn about mental health care in other countries, including Uganda. We were fortunate to have Dr. Godfrey Rukundo, the head of Psychiatry at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda, help present this award. Dr. Merkel was also recognized for his efforts in working with refugees in Charlottesville, patients living in rural Appalachia via telemedicine, and helping develop the Clinica Latina at the Charlottesville Free Clinic. The PSV appreciates Dr. Merkel’s efforts to expand mental health services in underserved areas and among underserved populations.
