We know these are unprecedented and challenging times for most of us. Your government affairs team is closely following every action of Governor Northam’s administration in response to the COVID-19 crisis and their immediate or potential impact on physicians and patients.
We are also in close contact with the state legislative caucuses as they prepare for the Reconvene (or “Veto”) Session scheduled for April 22, 2020, when the General Assembly meets for one day to vote on the Governor’s actions on bills, including the budget. State revenue is expected to take a major dive as a result of the crisis, likely prompting significant adjustments to the budget and certain legislation passed this session that could affect the economy, including healthcare policy and investments, minimum wage raises, and workers’ rights.
It is important we remain vigilant and prepared as we formally conclude this legislative season with Veto Session. As described in our legislative update, it was a busy and productive session for the physician and psychiatric community, including transitioning to and operating under the new Democratic majorities. We will have a lot of work to do in the off-session. Even during this crisis, we must be ready for when it ends. Please consider making a contribution to PsychMD PAC to demonstrate our leadership in healthcare, especially as many of the measures being taken to address the coronavirus also take a toll on the mental and behavioral health of Virginians around the Commonwealth.
As you know, a well-resourced PAC allows us to support legislators who support our profession and patients, introduce us to new legislators – 16 freshman members were elected in 2019 – and engage in leadership and caucus events so that PSV’s voice is at the table as part of a comprehensive government affairs strategy.
