Stephen Cunningham, MD
PSV President
On behalf of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia, I want to extend my thanks to all of the wonderful speakers who put so much time and effort into preparing for the 2020 Spring Conference in Richmond, Virginia. We are all so disappointed that we did not have the opportunity to hear their presentations, but we also recognize that the need to reduce the risks of the COVID-19 pandemic outweighed the benefits of a professional conference. We also would like to thank the many sponsors of our conference, nearly all of whom graciously asked that we transfer their financial support to the Fall conference in September 2020.
The PSV 2020 Fall Conference in Roanoke, Virginia, planned for September 25-26, 2020, appears to be particularly relevant now more than ever. The title "Addressing Patient Angst in a Tumultuous World" was originally intended to refer to the stressors that our patients are experiencing in the political, cultural, environmental and existential realms. However, due to recent events, so many other stressors have been foisted upon the entirety of humanity, including massive economic turmoil, disparities in healthcare and unprecedented instability in employment. In short, our patients need our help managing the intense stressors that they (and we) are now facing.
PSV will continue to work in conjunction with the APA to provide updates and tips on how to help our patients during these stressful times. As psychiatrists, we also need to make sure that we care for each other to ensure that we are able to adequately care for our patients. Please feel free to reach out to me or members of the PSV Board if there is anything that we can do to be a resource to you as a professional colleague as you continue to provide compassionate care to the most vulnerable members of our society.
I hope that this newsletter finds you and your family in good health.
