The American Psychiatric Association (APA) held its 2020 September Components Meeting September 24-26, 2020. Due to the pandemic, the meeting was held virtually, and various councils and committees met to deliberate various policies and future directions to be taken by the APA. The meetings concluded with the State Advocacy Conference 2020, where the APA members learned about advocacy and state legislative processes. Prominent speakers, including the President of the Navajo Nation, Mr. Jonathan Nez, discussed the impact of telemedicine on the future of psychiatry and patient care, racial equity and health disparity in psychiatric care, and the implications of the recent Presidential elections on health care.
This September Components meeting was also the venue for the Sixth APA/APA Foundation All Fellows’ Orientation. APA/APA Foundation’s prestigious fellowships are an opportunity for psychiatry trainees to be trained in their areas of interest at an organizational level. Approximately 160 Fellows from nine fellowships were present for the meeting. They attended breakout sessions on introduction to APA Governance, post-residency planning, social media training, preparing for lifelong requirements, collaborative care, and structural racism and diversity. Prominent Leaders from the APA, including Dr. Jeffery Geller, President of the APA, and Dr. Saul Levin, Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of the APA, addressed the fellows and answered their questions during the orientation.
The APA/APA Foundation’s fellowship provides an excellent opportunity to work with the APA for professional development and train more in their areas of interest. The 2021 Fellowship Application Cycle is now open, and more details are available on the APA website. The application deadline is January 31, 2021.
