I hope everyone is having a great start to the summer. I am looking forward to our upcoming summer board meeting to set our agenda for the year. We have several items of priority on our radar. We will carefully plan for the next General Assembly session and prioritize issues for our advocacy efforts.

About two hundred healthcare related bills were introduced in the General Assembly last session. We are anticipating that this upcoming session will also have several important bills that will affect the way we practice and might have an impact on our patients. It is imperative to get involved and join our advocacy efforts as we are preparing for the next General Assembly session.

I was able to attend APA’s President’s orientation along with fifty other district branch presidents from across the United States. It was an exciting and informative meeting. It was a great reminder that other states are facing similar challenges and we can look towards each other to learn from successful programs and legislations. The APA has several resources to help shape our advocacy and I am looking forward to utilizing these resources to help revamp our advocacy efforts here in Virginia. I am thrilled at the opportunity to explore various avenues to address the access to care crisis and very pleased that these approaches also align with our broader mission.

Lastly, I am very excited to announce the theme for our fall conference: New Era in Psychiatry. We have confirmed excellent speakers like Dr. Elizabeth Ryznar who recently published the book: ‘Landmark Papers in Psychiatry’ and Dr. Christina Girgis, founder of Psychiatry network, a large social media support and networking platform. The fall conference will take us through a journey of Psychiatric practice from the past to the future.  I also want to encourage our medical students, residents and new scholars to submit posters for our fall poster competition. PSV poster sessions are designed to encourage and assist new researchers and scholars.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at our fall meeting and I am anticipating some excellent posters for our poster session.
