President's Message

As was said so many years ago, “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

The recent act of senseless violence in Orlando in the early morning of June 12 calls to mind other similar tragedies at the hands of deranged individuals who, while certainly far from normal, may or may not be mentally ill per se. Whether they are considered criminally insane, terrorists, sociopaths or merely criminals, one thing is certain. The horrific carnage they carried out was facilitated by using highly mechanized weapons. Clearly, then, the APA’s advocacy of  funding for research into the causes and prevention of gun violence through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a position we should all be able to support.

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Jim Reinhard is well known to us as the former Mental Health Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Virginia. At our Fall Meeting in Roanoke, Dr. Reinhard will be speaking to us on this relevant topic, so please join us Friday and Saturday, October 7-8 at the Hotel Roanoke, for an enlightening update on this and other controversial topics.
